How VPPs unleash the power of many to drive energy independence and lower costs
The greater good of VPPs
Tibber has Europe's largest residential VPP, with access to the most energy markets and the greatest flexible capacity—able to instantly adjust the energy equivalent to powering hundreds of thousands of homes at peak demand.
This scale matters because the electricity grid requires perfect balance between supply and demand. Renewable energy presents a challenge: we can't control when the sun shines or wind blows. If there's too much power, equipment overheats; too little, and blackouts occur. Our VPP solves this by coordinating millions of devices in real-time to maintain this critical balance.
For you: Lower energy bills and new revenue
When you join Tibber's VPP, you join Grid Rewards and go from energy consumer to active market participant. Your devices earn money through Grid Rewards each time they help balance the grid. Tibber earns money from grid operators for this essential service and and shares those earnings directly with you—creating a new revenue stream from devices you already own.
You also gain access to cheaper energy prices through our collective buying power. Tibber has access to the most flex markets, finding and purchasing the most affordable energy—typically from renewable sources—creating a win-win: lower bills and a household powered more by clean energy. With a home battery like Homevolt, you increase energy independence by storing power when prices are low and using it when they're high or when the grid is strained.
For society: Affordable energy and resilient communities
As more households join our VPP, whole communities start providing the grid-balancing services once monopolised by giant, incumbent energy companies. Revenue flows to households rather than energy executives, while the overall cost of balancing the grid decreases, cutting energy prices for everyone—even those not in the VPP.
Local grid balancing also significantly reduces blackout risks. Tibber’s VPP prevents small problems from growing by smoothing peak demand and responding in seconds to fluctuations that could trigger outages. This creates a protective buffer that stabilises the entire electrical system, and insulates communities from volatile global energy markets and supply chains.
With lower baseline energy costs and a more stable system, more families can afford (and are incentivised to buy) EVs and home batteries, creating a virtuous cycle where more families feel encouraged to invest—accelerating the transition and spreading its benefits across socioeconomic boundaries.
Together, we’re part of a collective movement taking decisive action rather than waiting for distant solutions—with remarkable planetary benefits.
For the planet: Enabling the renewable energy revolution
VPPs offer a powerful solution to a critical challenge in our climate fight. Today, fossil-fuel plants are called upon to balance our electricity grid despite remarkable advances in renewable technology. But now, VPPs can provide these same balancing services at lower cost using renewable energy instead, finally breaking our dependence on dirty and expensive fossil fuels for grid stability.
The environmental impact is already substantial and quantifiable. Our VPP has processed 137,000 MWh in a year, enough energy to power a town of 10,000 residents or more. And we’ve strategically shifted 25,000 MWh to help balance the grid—displacing the need of balancing from the equivalent of from a massive 500 MWh gas-powered plant for 50 hours. This directly eliminates the need for fossil-fuel generation.
As our VPP grows, so does this impact. Our VPP also becomes increasingly competitive in energy markets, winning more bids to balance the grid simply because it's more economical.
Europe expects to add 600 GW of new solar and wind by 2030—equivalent to 600 nuclear power plants. Without VPPs, this would require 20-40 GW of additional flexible resources from hundreds of new fossil fuel plants, undermining our biggest climate goals.
So every intervention by our VPP—charging connected devices when renewables are abundant or pausing charging when production drops—reduces carbon emissions, and makes renewable energy more reliable by increasing the grid’s capacity to handle solar and wind.
The power is in your hands
Every household that joins Tibber's VPP votes for a more sustainable, practical and immediate pathway to an emission-less energy future. Instead of feeling powerless against climate challenges, you gain agency with a choice to take meaningful action that benefits you, your community and our planet.
Together, we're creating a more affordable, reliable and independent energy future for all—not through distant and expensive infrastructure projects, but through millions of small decisions that add up to transformative change. Today.
